'Gato Pima'
just fry me....
Hello my dear readers,
I have been absent for a long time because i have had very busy days at the office. Since i had not made anything mauritian for my last post, which was on my national day, i decided to make something mauritian. Come to think of it, i don't think i have ever made anything mauritian and posted on my blog. Here the South Africans call 'gato pima' vada, i think in India too, can't remeber very well. Being me, and not going through the process of soaking the dal and crushing it(takes too long! and besides i have been known to have lazy days!) i made the one from a box that i had bought in November when i visited Durban. And it came out so good, tasted just like the ones i used to buy in Mauritius. Actually that my dad used to buy on sunday mornings and after waking up late i would have some in a bread with butter all washed down with tea. yummy!
I had made quite a few so the next day we had 'gato pima' salad with baguettes. 'Gato pima' salad is very mauritian, just chop tomatoes, onion, coriander and chillies, break the gato pima and add salt to your taste. Unfortunately, i was too hungry and ate it all, so no pictures here! As you can see from the pics, i just soaked half of the box in a cup of water, added chillies, spring onions and onions and voila!
Finally i can say i posted something mauritian, have a lovely week, am excited long weekend here, friday and monday off! Wish every week it was like that.

Try making a dholl paste at home itself. Let the "dal" in water for about 6 hours. Then give it a trip in the grinder.
Add salt, onion slice, and chili. Fry. It tastes better. The best is to keep the dal in the freezer for one day. Then when you fry it, it become crispy. :)
Hey thanks for stopping by and the tip. I think next time, i will definitely give it a try. :-)
Hmmm gato piment!! I once tried making home-made gato piment and they turned out pretty good :p
Du pain chaud, du beurre et gato piment on a Sunday morning! Hahaha you did that too, eh? We used to do that on weekends as well :)
Angele, i think next time i should just give the real thing a try and not make it from a box. Eh oui, gato piment, du beurre, mo pense sa et mo commence faim! :-)
I guess it was a traditional thing to buy hot gato pima on sunday mornings in every mauritian household. I was more into sweet stuff so my dad used to get poutou/ounde/gato moutaye for me!
I miss all these food, that's why every time i come home, i return with a few extra kilos! :-)
Gato piment, baguette croquante avec fromage craft... Anju and Angele, you really should try it... I prefer it with a nice cup of black coffee on a nice Sunday afternoon...
